Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are focused on building momentum following their recent Champions League round-of-16 qualification, and he has dismissed speculation surrounding Anthony Gordon ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton at St James’ Park.

Reflecting on the Toffees, Howe said: “It’s a difficult game for us. Our defensive mentality has to be improved. Everton have been strong away from home, and David Moyes’ team is always tough to break down. Our attacking play needs to be sharp, and defensively we must be more solid. It’s amazing to be back at home. We have to build our rhythm after Qarabag – the performance wasn’t perfect, but the result was what we needed.”

Everton currently sit ninth in the table, just above Newcastle in 12th, adding extra significance to the encounter.

When asked about the upcoming Champions League draw, Howe said: “Whoever we get will be mouth-watering for us.”

Addressing recent reports linking Gordon with moves to Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool, Howe remained unbothered: “You tell me. It’s your industry creating those stories. The players need to be robust. I’ve seen a strong response from everyone – the feeling in the squad is high. Rumour and speculation come with the territory of being a top player. I haven’t seen the story, so it’s news to me. What matters is how the players react – they will stay focused and ignore it.”

Howe also provided updates on key youngsters Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento. Livramento is expected back in early March after running separately from the squad, while Miley requires careful management following a couple of injections. “If we don’t manage Lewis’ injury correctly, he could be out for the season,” Howe warned.

The Magpies now aim to carry their Champions League form into a vital weekend clash as they target consistency under their manager.
