Ħamrun Spartans sent out a clear statement of intent as they overpowered league leaders Floriana with a convincing 3–1 victory at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

It was a commanding display from the reigning champions, who showcased their strength and balance in both attack and defence to secure a vital win — one that guarantees them a place in the Top Six with a match to spare.

The Spartans dominated large spells of the first half, taking a deserved two-goal lead through N’Dri Koffi and Matias Garcia. Early in the second half, Garcia added his second and Ħamrun’s third to put the result beyond doubt.

Although the Spartans were reduced to ten men when Eder was shown a straight red card shortly after, they held firm against Floriana’s pressure. The Greens managed to pull one back through Mustapha Jah, but the champions never looked in danger of surrendering their lead.

The result lifts Ħamrun to third place on 19 points, just three behind joint leaders Floriana and Valletta.

Ħamrun made their intentions clear from the start and were rewarded after just 12 minutes. Matias Garcia’s cross found Koffi, whose deflected effort wrong-footed Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Ciolett.

Floriana tried to respond, with Joao Teixeira testing the Spartans’ backline, but Ryan Camenzuli was alert to block his attempt. Semar Smajlagic then came close to doubling the lead after intercepting a misplaced pass, only for his effort to drift narrowly wide.

As Floriana grew into the match, Ħamrun struck again just before half-time. Smajlagic, recently recovered from a head injury, set up Garcia, who curled a superb strike into the top corner for 2–0.

Hamrun control proceedings

Barely a minute into the second half, Garcia capitalised on a defensive error from Charles M’Mwomba to score his second of the game with a precise low shot.

Ħamrun’s momentum was briefly halted when Eder received a harsh red card for an alleged headbutt on Zachary Scerri, leaving the champions down to ten men.

Floriana pushed forward in search of a way back, but Ħamrun’s defensive organisation, led by Matthew Guillaumier and Steve Borg, kept them at bay. Teixeira squandered a golden opportunity on 71 minutes, firing over from close range, before Jah finally reduced the deficit nine minutes from time after Bonello had parried Mendonça’s initial effort.

It proved a mere consolation, as the Spartans comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to claim a crucial and deserved victory.
