Ħamrun Spartans complete dramatic turnaround to win Opening Round

Ħamrun Spartans capped off an impressive comeback in the YoHealth Malta Premier League by defeating Sliema Wanderers 1–0 to clinch top spot in the Opening Round and take a major step towards the championship title.
Trailing Floriana by a single point going into the final day, the reigning champions knew they had to beat Sliema and hope Valletta could take points off Floriana. The scenario unfolded perfectly for the Spartans as a narrow victory at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, coupled with a goalless draw between Floriana and Valletta, sent Ħamrun to the summit.
A goal from new signing Demir Ceter proved decisive, lifting Ħamrun to 34 points — one clear of Floriana — and sealing the Opening Round honours.
The match itself was evenly contested, with clear-cut chances at a premium. Ħamrun broke the deadlock on 29 minutes when Ceter showed composure inside the area, controlling the ball, turning past his marker and firing a low effort beyond goalkeeper Rashed Al Tumi.
Matías García came close to doubling the lead seven minutes later, only to be denied by a fine save from Al Tumi.
Sliema thought they had equalised seven minutes before the interval when former Spartan Roko Prsa finished from close range. However, following a Football Video Support review, the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.
After the break, Ħamrun continued to press. N’Dri Koffi struck the side-netting with a powerful effort, while Ceter squandered two golden opportunities around the hour mark — first shooting narrowly wide when through on goal, then firing over the bar after being teed up by Compri.
As news filtered through from the National Stadium that Floriana and Valletta remained deadlocked, tension mounted among the Spartans supporters. Goalkeeper Henry Bonello proved decisive in preserving the lead, producing an excellent save to deny Sulehmana Bah before pulling off a stunning stop in stoppage time to keep out Kyrian Nwoko and secure the clean sheet.
Meanwhile, at the National Stadium, Floriana missed the chance to secure top spot as they were held to a 0–0 draw by Valletta.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Greens, who played more than half an hour with a numerical advantage following the early dismissal of Valletta debutant Diogo Tavares. Despite this, Floriana struggled to impose themselves, and the situation was further complicated midway through the second half when Charles M’Mwombwa was also sent off, restoring numerical parity.
Both sides handed debuts to new signings, with Floriana starting Bosnia and Herzegovina midfielder Alen Kurtalic and wingback Myles Beerman, while Valletta included Diogo Tavares in their starting line-up.
Valletta nearly took the lead inside two minutes when Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Cioletti rushed out to clear but sent the ball straight to Yannick Yankam, whose long-range effort narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Andrea Zammit forced Cioletti into another fine save after Floriana failed to deal with a cross from Tavares.
However, Tavares’ debut ended abruptly after just 13 minutes when he was shown a straight red card for striking Zach Xerri in an aerial challenge following an FVS review.
Despite enjoying a numerical advantage, Floriana found it difficult to break down Valletta’s disciplined defence. Jake Grech’s corner was met by Owen Spiteri, but Valletta goalkeeper Adilson Maringa produced a superb reflex save.
Ten minutes into the second half, Floriana’s Charles M’Mwombwa was dismissed for violent conduct after an off-the-ball incident involving Sava Radic.
The match continued to ebb and flow, with Floriana going closest on 75 minutes when Jake Grech’s free-kick skimmed the upright. Late penalty appeals from both sides were waved away after FVS checks, while in stoppage time Valletta defender Savić made a crucial last-ditch block to deny Federico Varela.
In the dying moments, Valletta almost snatched victory, but Meijer failed to connect cleanly after a fine run by Kewom Ewurum, ensuring the stalemate held — a result that ultimately handed Ħamrun Spartans the Opening Round title.
