Gvardiol injury blow as Manchester City defender faces shin surgery

Manchester City have confirmed that defender Josko Gvardiol will undergo surgery on a shin injury later this week.
The 23-year-old Croatia international was forced off early in the second half of Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Chelsea, raising concerns over his fitness.
In a statement released on Monday, the club said: “The defender will have surgery later this week, and assessment remains ongoing to determine the full extent of the injury and the expected prognosis.”
Gvardiol’s absence would add to Pep Guardiola’s defensive worries. City are currently second in the Premier League table with 42 points, six adrift of leaders Arsenal, and are already dealing with other injury issues at the back. Rúben Dias was also withdrawn during the Chelsea match due to injury, while England centre-back John Stones remains sidelined.
The situation leaves City facing a potential defensive shortage as they continue their push for domestic and European honours.
