Gritty Alcaraz fights through cramp to beat Zverev in Melbourne thriller

Carlos Alcaraz showed remarkable resilience to overcome physical adversity and defeat Alexander Zverev in a gripping five-set semi-final, winning 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-7(4), 7-5 to reach his first Australian Open final and keep his career Grand Slam ambitions alive.
The 22-year-old Spaniard appeared severely hampered midway through the third set after suffering a leg issue that restricted his movement. Despite losing that set in a tiebreak, Alcaraz relied on his exceptional shot-making, precision, and mental strength to remain competitive and extend the contest.
Battling through discomfort, Alcaraz eventually prevailed in the deciding set and will now prepare for a final showdown against either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner. Victory on Sunday would complete his collection of Grand Slam titles.
Already experienced in marathon matches on the biggest stages—most notably his French Open final triumph over Jannik Sinner last year—Alcaraz once again demonstrated his belief and composure in the longest Australian Open semi-final in history, lasting five hours and 27 minutes.
“I always say that you have to believe in yourself, no matter what you’re struggling with,” Alcaraz said.
“Physically, it was one of the most demanding matches of my career. But I’ve been in these situations before. I had to put my heart into it and fight until the last ball. I’m extremely proud of the way I came back in the fifth set.”
The match began with both players holding serve comfortably on a sun-drenched Rod Laver Arena. Alcaraz secured the first break after Zverev double-faulted and went on to claim the opening set.
Zverev responded strongly in the second, overcoming early pressure and building a 5-2 lead. However, Alcaraz fought back with aggressive baseline play, levelling the score before dominating the tiebreak to take a two-set advantage.
The momentum shifted in the third set as Alcaraz began to struggle physically. After taking a medical timeout, he attempted to push through the discomfort, even resorting to pickle juice for relief. Zverev capitalised on his opponent’s limitations and claimed the tiebreak to extend the match.
With Alcaraz’s movement gradually improving, the fourth set became another tense battle. The Spaniard held firm under pressure, pumping his fists to the delight of the crowd, but Zverev’s improved serving saw him force a fifth set.
Zverev struck first in the decider, earning an early break. Yet Alcaraz slowly rediscovered his rhythm, producing breathtaking defensive runs and full-stretch winners to ignite the arena. His momentum culminated in a crucial break in the 10th game before he served out the match to seal a memorable victory.
After securing the first five-set win on centre court this year, Alcaraz paid tribute to the crowd.
“I couldn’t be here right now without you,” he said.
“I’m really grateful for the support throughout the tournament. I’m just so happy to play my first final in Melbourne. It’s something I’ve been chasing for a long time.”
