Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of the Swedish national team, replacing Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The former Chelsea, West Ham, and Brighton manager has signed a short-term contract that covers Sweden’s remaining fixtures, including potential playoff matches in March next year. The deal will automatically extend if Sweden secures qualification for the World Cup.

“I am very honoured by the task, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said. “Sweden has fantastic players performing in the world’s best leagues week after week. My job will be to create the right conditions for the team to perform at the highest level and lead Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”

The English coach, who previously worked in Swedish football earlier in his career, faces a major challenge. Sweden have endured a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign so far, collecting just one point from four matches under Tomasson.

That poor run leaves them six points adrift of second place with only two games remaining — a steep uphill battle for qualification.

Potter begins his new role immediately.
