Gozo Weekender 2026: Malta’s Top-Flight Football Returns for Two Action-Packed Weekends

The Malta Premier League (MPL) is proud to announce the return of the Gozo Weekender for 2026. Following last year’s massive success, this year’s edition is expanding to cover two consecutive weekends in April, bringing elite football and significant economic impact to the island of Gozo.
The Schedule
In a new format for the 2026 season, the action will be split across the Top and Bottom six fixtures:
- Weekend 1 (April 11–12): The Gozo Stadium will host three marquee Top 6 matches from Match Week 28.
- Weekend 2 (April 18–19): The focus shifts to the Bottom 6, with three Match Week 30 fixtures taking place in Gozo.
- Note: Match Week 29 fixtures will be held in Malta during the intervening midweek.
Innovation & Youth Engagement
This year introduces a Youth Friendly Tournament for U10–U12 teams. All MPL clubs are invited to assemble squads to compete alongside Gozitan youth teams, fostering community spirit and collaboration. Furthermore, the Gozo Stadium will feature Football Video Support (FVS) for the first time, ensuring the highest competitive standards for these crucial matches.
Economic & Community Impact
Last year’s event generated over 2,300 bed nights, and the MPL projects this year’s expansion will contribute approximately €600,000 to the Gozitan economy.
“This initiative allows us to bring Malta’s top division closer to the Gozitan public,” said Alan Abela, CEO of the Malta Premier League. “With attendances up by 23,000 spectators this season alone, we are committed to further raising the league’s profile while supporting domestic tourism.”
Special Thanks
The MPL extends its gratitude to the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, Visit Gozo, and the GFA for their continued partnership and support in making this showpiece event possible.
Next Steps
The official draws for the Closing Round (Top & Bottom 6) will take place this Monday, March 16th, to determine the specific matchups for the Gozo fixtures.
