From Gozo’s Tracks to International Circuits: The Remarkable Rise of Matthias Sultana

From the quiet tracks of Gozo to the high-speed circuits of Europe, 10-year-old racer Matthias Sultana is fast becoming one of Malta’s most exciting young motorsport prospects.
Born in 2015, Matthias began riding at just six years old after receiving his first KTM 50cc bike. His natural ability and fearless determination quickly set him apart, as he dominated junior GMA mock races and established himself as a standout local talent.
In 2022, Matthias took his first step beyond Gozo, attending an intensive training camp at MX Simeto in Catania, Sicily, where his potential caught the eye of scouts. He soon joined the MX Amodeo Academy, refining his racing technique and deepening his commitment to the sport. On his seventh birthday, he upgraded to a KTM 65cc, embracing a rigorous daily training routine supported by his family.
Matthias’s breakthrough came in 2023, when the Gozo Motocross Association (GMA) launched its inaugural junior championship. Competing as the youngest rider in the field, he swept all heats and finals, collecting every available trophy and earning the GMA Holeshot Award for the season. His winning streak extended across Sicily, strengthening his growing reputation.
In November 2024, Matthias captured the Trofeo Sicilia–Malta, winning all three races in dominant fashion. His continued success was recognized early the following year when the Gozo Rotary Club presented him with the David Carrington Award, honoring his achievements and his role in inspiring Gozo’s next generation of athletes.
The summer of 2025 marked a major milestone in Matthias’s career. His talent drew the attention of Pierfrancesco Pileri, the legendary Italian coach and former world champion mentor behind riders such as Loris Capirossi. Under Pileri’s guidance at the Pileri Team Academy, Matthias transitioned from motocross to circuit racing, training at renowned Italian venues including Castello di Branduzzo and Latina.
Now, Matthias is set to take the next leap forward. This December, he will make his international circuit debut at the MIR Cup Moto 5 finale in Cartagena, Spain — a pivotal event marking the start of a full 2026 international racing season.
“Matthias has shown extraordinary dedication for such a young rider,” said Pierfrancesco Pileri. “His focus, skill, and natural instinct on the bike are exceptional. I believe he has the potential to go very far in this sport.”
From humble beginnings on the tracks of Gozo to the competitive circuits of Europe, Matthias Sultana’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of dreaming big.
