Frankfurt Boss Toppmöller Cautious of Resurgent Liverpool Ahead of Champions League Clash

Eintracht Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller has warned his side not to underestimate Liverpool despite the Premier League champions’ surprising slump, insisting that the Reds have been “the better team in every game” of their recent four-match losing streak.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool travel to Germany on Wednesday looking to halt a rare run of defeats that has stunned supporters and pundits alike. Despite spending nearly £450 million in summer reinforcements, the English champions have stumbled in recent weeks, suffering losses to Chelsea, Galatasaray, Crystal Palace, and most recently Manchester United, who edged them 2–1 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Liverpool have not lost four consecutive matches in any competition for more than a decade — their last such run coming in November 2014 under then-manager Brendan Rodgers.
Yet Toppmöller believes the results don’t tell the full story.
“Sunday’s game could easily have finished 4–2 for Liverpool,” the 44-year-old told reporters on Tuesday. “They’re not in top form, but only in terms of results. When you actually watch their matches, they’ve been the better side every time and have created the most chances.”
Toppmöller expects a fierce response from Arne Slot’s men in Frankfurt.
“We’re preparing for a world-class team,” he said. “You have to understand what it does to a team like that to lose four in a row — they’ll come here with fire and motivation.”
Liverpool’s Struggles and Star Men Under Scrutiny
One of Liverpool’s biggest concerns in recent weeks has been the dip in form of star forward Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has struggled to find his usual rhythm, but Toppmöller was quick to dismiss any talk of decline.
“For me, Mo Salah has been among the top three players in the world over the past decade — and he still is,” he said.
The Frankfurt boss also had words of caution regarding Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s £100 million summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, who returns to his homeland for the first time since the move.
“His performances have been quite decent, even if the numbers aren’t what they were in Leverkusen,” Toppmöller noted. “But he’s playing for a club where the spotlight is always on, and where the world is constantly watching. I’m incredibly convinced of his quality — I just hope he doesn’t show it tomorrow.”
Liverpool’s form may have faltered, but Frankfurt know that the wounded champions remain dangerous. For Toppmöller, Wednesday’s clash is not about facing a struggling opponent — but about meeting a giant determined to rise again.
