Jannik Sinner powered into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open on Wednesday, defeating Alexei Popyrin in straight sets to move a step closer to a potential final showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.

Competing in his first tournament since his semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open last month, the Italian looked sharp in a 6-3, 7-5 second-round victory in Doha.

Sinner will face rising Czech talent Jakub Mensik in Thursday’s last-eight clash.

The world number two extended an impressive streak with the win, making it 50 consecutive victories against players ranked outside the top 50 — a run stretching back to his defeat to Dusan Lajovic in Cincinnati in 2023.

“I respect every player, but I always try to play my best tennis,” Sinner said when informed of the milestone. “The ranking, at the end of the day, is just a number. Everyone is playing high quality tennis.

“Especially when the opponents don’t have much to lose, you always have to stay very focused.”

Australian world number 53 Popyrin competed gamely but was unable to carve out a single break-point opportunity against the clinical Italian. Sinner was dominant on serve in the opening set, dropping just three points and securing the decisive break in the sixth game.

The second set proved more competitive, with Popyrin pushing hard to force a tie-break. However, Sinner broke at 5-5 before calmly serving out the match to seal his place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, world number one Alcaraz was scheduled to face Frenchman Valentin Royer later in the day as the tournament in Doha gathered momentum.
