Football fans are in for a thrilling afternoon of action on Saturday as the Malta Premier Final Four gets underway with two highly anticipated semi-finals at the National Stadium.

The standout clash sees fierce rivals Floriana and Valletta renew their historic rivalry in a derby that promises tension, intensity and drama.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Ħamrun Spartans will aim to keep their title defence alive when they face an ambitious Marsaxlokk side later in the evening.

For Floriana, Saturday’s semi-final carries extra significance after last season’s painful exit. Despite dominating both the Opening and Closing Rounds, the Greens saw their championship hopes shattered by Ħamrun Spartans in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Floriana assistant coach Jean Paul Desira said the team is approaching the derby calmly but with full awareness of the occasion.

“The players are well prepared and we trained strongly throughout the week,” Desira said.

“Everyone understands the importance of this match and we have felt great support from the administration all week. These are the matches players dream of playing in.

“We know there will be pressure because it’s a derby, but we trust our quality and believe we can achieve a positive result.”

Club captain Dunstan Vella expects a balanced contest and stressed the importance of staying united.

“We know this will be a very difficult and tight game,” Vella said.

“This is the biggest derby in Malta, but we are treating it like any other match while respecting our opponents and believing in our strengths.”

On the opposite side, Valletta coach Thane Micallef insisted his side deserved its place in the Final Four thanks to the consistency shown throughout the season.

“Our consistency brought us here,” Micallef said.

“This group has shown resilience, sacrifice and strong character all season long. Reaching this stage is a reward for all the hard work we have done.

“We want to enjoy the occasion but also maximise our opportunity to win the title for ourselves and our supporters.”

Valletta captain Brandon Paiber described the derby as the kind of occasion every footballer wants to experience.

“We worked hard all season to reach this stage,” Paiber said.

“These games are usually decided by small details and by the team that makes fewer mistakes. We know how important this derby is and we are proud to represent this club.”

The second semi-final sees Ħamrun Spartans face Marsaxlokk in what is expected to be another fiercely competitive encounter.

Despite an inconsistent run of form in recent weeks, the Spartans know victory is essential if they are to continue their bid for another league title.

Assistant coach Vincenzo Modica admitted the team is fully aware of the challenge awaiting them.

“We know how important this match is,” Modica said.

“In many ways it feels like the real final. We have played 55 matches this season, which is not easy, and Marsaxlokk are a very strong side.

“We know each other very well after facing each other four times already this season, but I am confident we can make our supporters proud and reach the final.”

Injured midfielder Ryan Camenzuli said the squad remains fully focused despite the pressure surrounding the occasion.

“We know the responsibility we carry,” Camenzuli said.

“We have experienced players who can handle pressure and we will do everything possible to reach the final.”

Marsaxlokk coach Enzo Potenza, however, believes his side can approach the clash with freedom and confidence.

“We have nothing to lose,” Potenza said.

“Reaching this stage is already a huge achievement and the players deserve enormous credit for their commitment and sacrifices throughout the season.

“Now we want to enjoy the occasion and try to take our opportunity, even if we know how difficult it will be against a strong team like Ħamrun.”

Club captain Niki Muscat said Marsaxlokk are fully motivated to cause an upset and secure European qualification.

“Our main target was always European football, but now that we are here we want to go even further,” Muscat said.

“We are mentally and physically ready and we will give everything to try and reach the final.”
