Finland’s World Cup dream crushed after stunning home loss to Malta

Second-half substitute Jake Grech ended Finland’s fading hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Malta claimed a shock 1-0 victory at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
Finland, already clinging to their qualification chances, came close to an ideal start when Benjamin Kallman forced Henry Bonello into a superb early save from close range. Despite their difficult campaign, the hosts showed early intent, while Malta—still searching for a first win in Group G—offered little attacking threat during the opening stages. Joseph Mbong appeared to test Viljami Sinisalo midway through the first half, but a crucial defensive block spared the Finnish goalkeeper.
Bonello continued to frustrate the Finns before halftime, producing an excellent stop to deny Joel Pohjanpalo, then eclipsing it moments later with a remarkable save from Oliver Antman.
With a playoff place on the line and Poland pushing for their spot in Group G, Finland emerged from the break determined to find the breakthrough. Yet Malta’s inspired goalkeeper refused to yield. Adam Markhiyev’s driven strike from the edge of the box was beaten away, and Leo Walta was left stunned when Bonello stretched to claw his top-corner attempt out of the air. Antman threatened again in the 71st minute, but the Maltese keeper remained unbeatable.
Then, against the run of play, Malta delivered the decisive moment. In the 82nd minute, Grech stunned the home crowd with a brilliant long-range effort that flew beyond Sinisalo, sealing Malta’s first win of the 2026 qualifying campaign and ending Finland’s last mathematical chance of reaching their maiden World Cup finals.
It was a bitter night for the Eagle-Owls, who will now have to wait for another opportunity to return to a major tournament. Bonello, meanwhile, leaves Helsinki as Malta’s hero, his performance ensuring his side leapfrogs Lithuania into fourth place in the Group G standings.
Malta now look ahead to their final qualifier against Poland on Monday, eager to avoid finishing bottom of the group, while Finland must come to terms with a campaign that promised history but delivered heartbreak.
