Fernández nets late as Chelsea hold Man City and dent title ambitions

After closing out last year with eight consecutive victories, Manchester City were forced to settle for a second straight draw of 2026 as Chelsea earned a dramatic 1-1 result at the Etihad Stadium.
With pre-match attention dominated by the shock departure of Enzo Maresca, interim Chelsea boss Calum McFarlane set his side up cautiously, an approach that successfully blunted City’s early momentum. In fact, it was the visitors who fashioned the first opening, though Estevao’s effort from the centre of the box was well blocked by Josko Gvardiol.
City gradually took control and began to create chances, with Phil Foden twice going close before Bernardo Silva curled an effort over the bar from a promising position. Erling Haaland eventually found his rhythm late in the first half and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, crashing a left-footed, curling strike against the post.
That near miss proved to be the turning point. Just minutes later, Tijjani Reijnders found space inside the area and rifled a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle, giving the hosts a deserved lead heading into the break.
Chelsea emerged with renewed purpose after half-time and should have drawn level almost immediately when Pedro Neto raced clear on the counter, only to scoop his finish over the bar from close range. Haaland, eager to end a three-game scoring drought, continued to threaten but saw a powerful effort blocked by Benoît Badiashile.
Chances continued to come for City, yet one of the clearest opportunities of the second half fell to Chelsea, as Liam Delap forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a sharp save from a tight angle.
Late knocks to both Gvardiol and Rúben Dias disrupted City’s defensive stability and handed Chelsea renewed belief. That persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Malo Gusto surged down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross that City failed to clear, allowing Enzo Fernández to pounce at the far post and scramble home the equaliser in the fourth minute of added time.
The result sees City fall six points behind leaders Arsenal and level on points with Aston Villa, ending an eight-match winning league run at home. For McFarlane, the late goal marked a highly encouraging start to his interim reign and suggested Chelsea possess the resilience and quality needed for a strong finish to the season once a permanent successor to Maresca is appointed.
