Marco Verratti was long considered one of Europe’s finest midfielders during his time at Paris Saint-Germain. Now playing in the Qatar Stars League, the Italian superstar spoke exclusively with —from the Adriatic coast of Pescara to the bright lights of Paris and finally to the Middle East—reflecting on his career, EURO triumph, and the experience of sharing the pitch with Lionel Messi.

From Pescara to Paris

Verratti began his career at his hometown club Pescara, nurtured by legendary coach Zdenek Zeman. Remarkably, he moved to PSG without ever playing in Serie A. Now at Al-Duhail, after two seasons with Al Arabi, he is enjoying a new chapter in Qatar.

“Here, the style of football is definitely different, but football is always football,” Verratti says. “On the pitch, I have fun; all I need is a ball and my teammates. The game is calmer here, culturally different, and off the field, I’m discovering a new lifestyle. I feel really good.”

An Italian Without Serie A Experience

Verratti remains one of the most prominent Italian players never to feature in Serie A. When asked if that might change, he replied:

“In football, you never know. For now, I’m happy here, my family is happy, and I feel good. I still have a few years ahead and thankfully no injuries, so we’ll see if an opportunity arises.”

National Team Reflections

Verratti last represented Italy in 2023 and is uncertain about a return. “It was partly my decision when I came to Qatar. My kids live in Paris, so national team periods are the only time I see them. Football is my passion, but my kids come first.”

Zdenek Zeman: A Lasting Influence

Reflecting on his early days at Pescara, Verratti praises Zeman as “the best coach I ever had,” emphasizing the coach’s knowledge, discipline, and focus on technique. “If I’ve achieved a lot, much of it is thanks to him.” He remains in occasional contact with Zeman, sending messages on birthdays or holidays.

Giving Back to Pescara

Verratti is now the majority owner of Pescara, a gesture to give back to the club that shaped him. “It’s my way of thanking them. I want to help local kids and improve facilities so the next generation can thrive.”

EURO 2020 Triumph

Winning EURO 2020 with Italy was a career highlight. “It was the greatest satisfaction and emotion I’ve ever experienced. Winning for the national team is unique—the whole country supports you, not just a club. Wembley against England was unforgettable.”

PSG: A Decade of Memories

Verratti spent 11 years at PSG, amassing the third-most appearances in club history. “Those were the best years of my life, where I grew from adolescence to adulthood. PSG gave me everything—trophies, life lessons, and a place where my children were born. Even without winning the Champions League, I only have fond memories.”

He still follows the club closely: “My kids are huge PSG fans. I watch every match, and I want them to win. I feel connected to the club and its people.”

Playing With Legends

Verratti shares insights on his legendary teammates. “Messi is incredibly humble and simple; you don’t feel like you’re playing with the best ever. Neymar is infectious, always smiling and generous. Kylian Mbappe is determined, always ready to be the best, and reminds me of Ronaldo the Brazilian—someone who can change a game in an instant.”

Champions League Joy from Afar

Reflecting on PSG’s recent Champions League victory, Verratti says: “I watched the final from the stadium with friends. It was a relief for everyone—players, staff, and the president. I felt connected even from outside and was genuinely happy for the club.”
