Enzo Maresca: Chelsea’s Cole Palmer prepared for full 90 minutes against Villa

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer is set to play a full 90 minutes for the first time in months, manager Enzo Maresca confirmed Wednesday, as the Blues prepare to host high-flying Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Palmer has been limited by a groin injury and a broken toe, but Maresca says the playmaker has steadily progressed through careful management of his minutes.
“I think he is ready for 90 minutes. The progression for a player goes 45, one hour, 70,” Maresca told reporters ahead of the Villa clash. “He already played one hour against Everton and more than 70 against Newcastle, so I think the progression is there.”
Chelsea will also see the return of two more players from injury. Striker Liam Delap has recovered from a shoulder problem suffered earlier this month, while winger Estevao is back after a muscle issue sidelined him for the last two games.
“Estevao is back, he’s available for Saturday. Him and also Liam Delap… so I’m very happy for both,” Maresca said.
Maresca to serve touchline ban
Maresca will watch the match from the stands after receiving a touchline ban for accumulating three yellow cards this season. He previously served a suspension in October following a sending off against Liverpool.
“Yes, in almost 100 games, I’ve been suspended three times. One for celebration and two times for yellow cards,” he explained. “So yeah, unfortunately I will be in the stands, but Willy [Caballero], Danny [Walker], and the coaching staff are there.”
Praise for Reece James
The Italian also lauded captain Reece James for his growing influence, particularly after his standout performance in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle, where he scored from a free kick.
“He is growing in terms of leadership and playing more minutes. This is why we are happy—he can be fit and healthy and serve as a leader,” Maresca said. “He is one of our main players. He’s from our academy, he’s the captain. When he’s fit, he’s one of the best players we have, no doubt.”
Facing high-flying Villa
Chelsea face a tough test against third-placed Villa, who sit seven points above the Blues in the standings and have won 10 consecutive matches in all competitions under Unai Emery.
“They are doing fantastic this season, last season, and even years ago with Unai. It’s very clear how they play, and they’re full of confidence at the moment. That is very important for a football team,” Maresca said.
Palmer’s return to full fitness could be crucial as Chelsea look to challenge a strong Villa side and keep their top-four hopes alive.
