Brazil goalkeeper Ederson has revealed that he had already sought to leave Manchester City the season before last, admitting that injuries and unhappiness took a toll on him during his final years at the club.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Brazil’s friendly against Senegal on Saturday, the 32-year-old reflected on his summer move to Fenerbahçe, where he joined the Turkish giants in a deal worth around £12 million ($16.1 million) after eight hugely successful seasons in Manchester.

Ederson enjoyed a glittering spell at City following his 2017 transfer from Benfica, winning 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League. He also claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award three times.

“The season before that, I had already tried to leave, but it didn’t work out,” Ederson told reporters on Wednesday. “I think that influenced my performance a little. I had five injuries and wasn’t at my best.”

He admitted the repeated setbacks left him frustrated and mentally drained.

“It affected me. I had already made the decision with my family to speak to the club about leaving if they agreed. I needed a change. There’s no point staying at a giant, successful club if you’re not happy.”

Ederson said the move to Turkey has reignited his passion for football.

“It would have continued to affect me the same way if I’d stayed. It’s good to face new challenges — to feel that spark again. In Turkey, the atmosphere at games is incredible. I’m really happy with this new chapter and eager to win.”

Meanwhile, Brazil have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, extending their historic record of appearing in every edition of the tournament following a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in June.
