Eddie Howe Accepts Responsibility for Newcastle’s Poor Away Form Following Brentford Defeat

Eddie Howe accepted full responsibility for Newcastle’s struggling away form after the Magpies’ Premier League winless streak on the road stretched to nine matches following a 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Sunday.
Newcastle initially looked promising, taking the lead through Harvey Barnes, who marked his 50th Premier League goal in the 27th minute at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, the Magpies faltered in the second half. Kevin Schade equalised in the 56th minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope failed to deal with a flick-on from Michael Kayode’s long throw. Matters worsened when defender Dan Burn was sent off for a second yellow card after conceding a penalty with a foul on Dango Ouattara in the 73rd minute. Igor Thiago converted the spot-kick and then scored again in stoppage time, leaving Howe frustrated on the fourth anniversary of his appointment.
“I’m very disappointed that we got ourselves in a good position again and weren’t able to capitalise on that,” Howe said, reflecting on Newcastle’s 3-1 loss to struggling West Ham the previous weekend.
“It was always going to be a tough, physical game, and we needed to stand up to that. One mistake in the build-up to their first goal, we needed a reaction to that, and we didn’t get it. Very frustrating end to the game.”
The defeat leaves Newcastle in 14th place, just two points above the relegation zone. While the team has been strong at home this season, their performances on the road have been lacklustre.
Howe insisted the responsibility to fix the problem rested with him. “It’s different to the West Ham game. It’s important today that I support the players. We know it’s not good enough, and I take full responsibility for that. If we want to get that right, it starts now, and that’s all I can do at this moment.”
