Doekhi brace earns Union Berlin victory, sends Gladbach to bottom of Bundesliga

Union Berlin climbed into the Bundesliga’s top half on Friday night with a 3-1 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, extending the visitors’ miserable winless league run to 14 matches.
Gladbach’s hopes of ending their longest-ever top-flight drought suffered an early blow, as Danilho Doekhi opened the scoring just three minutes in, rising above the defence to head home Christopher Trimmel’s corner. Union continued to press, with Derrick Kohn firing narrowly wide, and doubled their advantage soon after. Ilyas Ansah’s driving run and shot against the post left the rebound for Doekhi to poke in his second of the night.
The Dutch defender, who doubled his goal tally from last season within the opening 26 minutes, was briefly overshadowed as Gladbach pulled one back. Yannik Engelhardt’s clever reverse pass found Haris Tabakovic, who curled a composed finish into the far corner to give the visitors hope.
Union tightened up after the break, sitting deeper to protect their lead. Gladbach thought they had equalized when Tabakovic scored again, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Their push for a late draw backfired, as Rani Khedira pounced on a headed clearance and drilled home a low volley to seal the result.
The victory lifts Steffen Baumgart’s side up to seventh, though their final position will depend on the weekend’s other results. For Gladbach, interim coach Eugen Polanski remains without a win, and the club faces an increasingly uphill battle to avoid being dragged deeper into the relegation fight.
