Derby della Madonnina takes centre stage with Napoli aiming to rebound

The spotlight falls on Milan this Sunday night as the city’s two football giants clash at San Siro with top spot in Serie A on the line. Meanwhile, a troubled Napoli side look to regroup following the international break.
Inter Milan return to league action leading Serie A on goal difference ahead of Roma, with Italian domestic football back at the iconic stadium just days after the national team’s disappointing defeat to Norway.
Cristian Chivu’s Inter sit two points clear of AC Milan, who are third behind Roma heading into the headline fixture of the weekend. Inter have been in formidable form, winning 11 of their last 12 matches in all competitions—their only slip coming in a defeat to Napoli last month—which has cemented their status as early Scudetto favourites.
After the derby, Inter will travel to face Atletico Madrid in Europe, where another victory would put them on the brink of reaching the last 16 following four wins from four in continental competition.
Marcus Thuram could make his first start since September after recovering fully from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of France’s recent World Cup qualifiers. However, Denzel Dumfries is expected to miss the derby with an ankle issue, forcing Carlos Augusto to switch flanks to provide width.
Milan, on the other hand, are boosted by the return of Adrien Rabiot from a calf injury sustained on France duty last month. Coach Massimiliano Allegri hopes both Rabiot and Luka Modric will be available for their first Milan derby.
Champions Napoli sit level with Milan on 22 points, keeping them firmly in the title race. Yet all is not well in Naples. Antonio Conte was given a short break during the international window to cool down following his furious reaction to a 2-0 defeat at Bologna—who are just three points off the top ahead of their weekend trip to Udinese.
Conte sparked speculation of a possible resignation when he slammed his team’s mentality, saying he wasn’t prepared to “accompany the dead,” accusing the squad of lacking fight. His frustrations deepened with the loss of Andre-Frank Anguissa to a hamstring injury on international duty with Cameroon, sidelining him until next year. The setback infuriated club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, who renewed calls for compensation for clubs whose players are injured while representing their countries.
Saturday also sees Luciano Spalletti resume his mission to revive Juventus as they travel to bottom-placed Fiorentina. For Spalletti, it’s a return to familiar territory—he grew up near Florence, played youth football at Fiorentina, and began his lengthy managerial journey nearby at Empoli more than three decades ago. Fiorentina, now under new coach Paolo Vanoli, are desperate to reverse their fortunes.
Player to Watch: Ademola Lookman
Lookman’s season has been turbulent, largely due to his push for a summer move to Inter which led to his exile under former Atalanta coach Ivan Juric. With Juric now dismissed and Raffaele Palladino taking charge, the Nigeria forward could find new momentum—starting with a significant test against Napoli.
Lookman, who has scored only once since being reinstated in September, was a standout performer in Gian Piero Gasperini’s final Atalanta side. His performances will be crucial if Palladino is to steer Atalanta out of their current slump. The 28-year-old’s frustrations with Juric were apparent during a Champions League match against Marseille, but under Palladino he now has an opportunity for a fresh start.
