Daniel-Kofi Kyereh poised for long-awaited comeback after three-year injury battle

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh is closing in on a long-awaited comeback to competitive football after fully rejoining SC Freiburg’s first-team training on Wednesday.
The Ghana international has been sidelined since February 4, 2023, when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Freiburg’s Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund.
The setback was particularly harsh for Kyereh, as it was not his first ACL injury. He had previously torn the ligament during his teenage years while still developing as a young professional.
Kyereh’s recovery was further complicated in 2024 when he experienced a relapse after returning to action during Freiburg’s summer pre-season. The recurrence forced him into another lengthy rehabilitation program, keeping him out of competitive action for an extended period.
Now, nearly three years after his last appearance, the 28-year-old has returned to full training with the Freiburg first team. He has also been named in Freiburg’s Europa League squad and is in contention to feature in Thursday’s European fixture against Maccabi Tel Aviv—potentially marking his first match since early 2023.
A return at this stage would be a major milestone for both Kyereh and the club. Before his injury, the former St. Pauli midfielder was celebrated for his intelligence on the ball, versatility across attacking positions, and tireless work rate.
His comeback also comes at a crucial time on the international stage. With the FIFA World Cup just five months away, Kyereh will be eager to regain form and put himself back in contention for a Ghana recall.
Kyereh has already earned 18 caps for the Black Stars, featuring at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and representing Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
