Comfortable Djokovic advances to Australian Open third round

Novak Djokovic booked his place in the Australian Open third round in emphatic fashion, brushing aside world No.141 qualifier Francesco Maestrelli in straight sets — and crediting a familiar arboreal ally for some added inspiration.
The Serbian legend, chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, needed just over two hours to dispatch the Italian 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 and will next face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in Melbourne.
Djokovic’s preparations are famously unconventional, and once again he spoke fondly of his ritual visits to a Brazilian fig tree in Melbourne’s botanical gardens — a routine he believes has helped him through multiple Australian Open triumphs.
“That is my oldest friend here in Melbourne,” said the 38-year-old, a 10-time champion at the tournament. “He has been there to heal my wounds and give me company. It’s a beautiful connection — nature is such a powerful ally. We’ve had a friendship for over 20 years.”
Playing under sunny skies but in cooler conditions than earlier in the week, the fourth seed looked keen to make quick work of his opponent. Scheduled for an early-afternoon slot on Rod Laver Arena rather than his customary evening appearance, Djokovic surged into a 5–2 lead in the opening set.
Maestrelli showed resilience, saving several set points to hold serve, but only postponed the inevitable as Djokovic wrapped up the opener in 47 minutes. While the Serbian was not quite as ruthless as in his opening-round win — also a straight-sets affair — he remained comfortably in control.
Djokovic broke immediately at the start of the second set, asserting his authority against the 23-year-old, who was making his Grand Slam debut. From there, the outcome was never in doubt, as the former world No.1 continued to dictate play and cruised through the final set to seal progression.
Still level with Margaret Court on 24 major titles since lifting the US Open trophy in 2023, Djokovic’s march toward history in Melbourne remains firmly on course.
