Chelsea thump Hull City as Wrexham battle past Ipswich Town into FA Cup fourth round

Pedro Neto delivered a scintillating display as Chelsea F.C. swept aside Hull City A.F.C. 4-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night, while Wrexham A.F.C. edged past Ipswich Town F.C. to reach the last 16.
The occasion carried added significance for Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, who returned to East Yorkshire after being dismissed by Hull in 2024 despite narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs.
Chelsea’s breakthrough arrived five minutes before the interval. Liam Delap slipped a clever pass into Neto’s path, and the winger finished neatly to put the visitors ahead. Neto then produced a moment of magic, curling a corner directly into the net to double the advantage.
The Portuguese forward was not finished there. After the restart, he completed his hat-trick following another intelligent lay-off from Delap, capping a dominant individual performance and taking Chelsea out of sight.
In between Neto’s strikes, Estevao Willian made amends for an earlier miss—when he blazed over after rounding Dillon Phillips—by calmly slotting home to add a third. Delap himself endured mixed fortunes in the first half, seeing a clearance ricochet off him onto the crossbar before failing to convert the rebound.
Hull’s challenge faded as the second half wore on, with frustration creeping in and bookings issued to John Lundstram and Joe Gelhardt. Lewis Koumas struck the post in stoppage time, but it proved little more than a footnote as Chelsea secured their eighth victory in 11 matches under Rosenior.
In North Wales, Wrexham also progressed, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ipswich. Josh Windass netted the decisive goal in the 34th minute on a bitterly cold evening, and the hosts defended resolutely thereafter to seal a famous cup triumph.
The result sends Wrexham into the FA Cup last 16 for the first time since the 1996-97 campaign, marking another memorable chapter in the club’s recent resurgence.
