Chelsea monitor Mainoo’s situation at Man United ahead of January transfer window

Chelsea are closely monitoring Kobbie Mainoo’s situation at Manchester United as they look for solutions to their ongoing midfield issues.
Officials at Stamford Bridge are assessing the transfer market, concerned about being short in central midfield. While the January window is seen as a tricky period to address all their problems, Chelsea remain open to opportunities that could strengthen the squad for the second half of the season.
With Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez playing nearly every minute when available, injuries to Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo have further strained the squad. Reece James has also stepped up in midfield, but club sources confirm Chelsea are still exploring potential signings for 2026 and beyond.
Chelsea have shown interest in young talents like Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton, but Mainoo may be a more realistic option.
At present, Manchester United are not willing to let Mainoo leave in January, though the situation could change if they bring in a new midfielder. If he does become available, Chelsea see a potential opportunity reminiscent of Alejandro Garnacho’s move from United.
Such a signing could also ease internal tensions at Chelsea, where head coach Enzo Maresca has come under increasing scrutiny. Maresca recently described enduring “the worst 48 hours” of his Chelsea tenure before their 2–0 win over Everton—comments widely interpreted as a critique of the club’s owners and sporting directors.
While Chelsea generally prioritise signing young talent for the future in January, the club remains flexible, aware that the mid-season transfer window can rapidly alter plans. Mainoo remains a player they are prepared to monitor closely if circumstances change.
