Chargers outlast Eagles in OT after dominant defensive display

Tony Jefferson delivered the decisive moment in overtime, intercepting Jalen Hurts to seal a dramatic 22–19 win for the Los Angeles Chargers over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday — a high-stakes duel between two playoff hopefuls.
Justin Herbert, just a week removed from surgery on his broken left (non-throwing) hand, absorbed a career-high seven sacks yet still managed 139 passing yards and a touchdown. Kicker Cameron Dicker proved crucial, drilling five field goals — including a booming 54-yard game-winner in overtime.
The Chargers’ defense hounded Hurts throughout the night, forcing four interceptions and a lost fumble — five turnovers in total, the worst of the Philadelphia quarterback’s career. The Eagles, now 8–5, have dropped three straight as their division lead continues to shrink.
“The defense played incredible. They came up with so many big stops,” Herbert said. “Not the way we drew it up, but the fight in these guys is so much fun to be a part of. We’ll keep getting better and keep moving forward.”
Saquon Barkley ignited the Eagles early in the fourth quarter with a 52-yard touchdown sprint, giving Philadelphia a 16–13 advantage just nine seconds into the period.
Dicker responded with a 31-yard field goal, only for Jake Elliott to boot a 44-yarder the other way. With eight seconds left in regulation, Dicker again came through, hitting from 46 yards to send the game to overtime knotted at 19–19.
After Dicker’s fifth kick put Los Angeles ahead in the extra session, the Eagles mounted a desperate drive to extend the game. A fourth-down penalty kept Philadelphia alive, and they pushed to the Chargers’ 17-yard line — but a tipped pass by Cam Hart fluttered into Jefferson’s arms, ending the contest with the eighth turnover of the night.
“It’s just staying in it — every yard matters, every play matters,” Jefferson said. “It was a team effort. We did what we had to do to get the stop.”
The veteran defensive back also saluted Herbert’s toughness.
“We’ll ride or die for number 10,” he said. “Strongest, most willed quarterback I’ve ever been around. Broken hand, surgery, and he’s out there practicing in a couple days. Much respect.”
Herbert added after the game, “I feel pretty good.”
The defending champion Eagles now see their NFC East cushion cut to 1.5 games, despite Barkley’s 20 carries for 122 yards and a score.
“We’ve got to be better,” Barkley said. “We continue to beat ourselves — not doing the little things right. Last year was last year. This one’s going to sting.”
Elsewhere in the AFC playoff race, the Indianapolis Colts suffered a devastating setback Monday as quarterback Daniel Jones was diagnosed with a torn right Achilles tendon. He is expected to undergo season-ending surgery later this week.
