Carrick heaps praise on Bruno Fernandes ahead of Man Utd’s ‘difficult’ West Ham clash

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick faced the media ahead of his side’s midweek trip to West Ham United.
United head to London on the back of a four-match unbeaten run since Carrick stepped into the role following Ruben Amorim’s departure. The positive start has kept the Red Devils firmly in the top-four hunt, though Chelsea remain close behind and piling on the pressure.
Carrick hails Fernandes’ influence
Carrick was quick to single out captain Bruno Fernandes, who has flourished under his guidance and recently suggested Carrick has the makings of a top manager.
“I understand how intelligent a footballer Bruno is,” Carrick said. “He’s bright, he cares deeply about this club, and in that sense we all want the same thing.
“Of course it’s nice when players you respect – and I respect Bruno a lot – say positive things about you. But ultimately it’s about the team and getting the best out of the group together.
“Time will tell. It’s not about judging success right now because nothing has really happened yet. Hopefully we’ve got a lot more work to do between now and the end of the season, and then we’ll see what happens.”
Expecting a battle at West Ham
West Ham come into the fixture chasing a fifth win in six matches after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Burnley, a result that edged them closer to Premier League safety.
Carrick expects a stern test from David Moyes’ side, who he believes will be fighting for every point.
“We’ve got a lot to fight for as well, so you’d hope that balances out,” he said. “It comes down to who can come out on top in the end.
“We’re fully aware of what we’re going into on Tuesday night and just how difficult it will be.”
Team news update
Carrick also provided an update on his squad, confirming that Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt are unlikely to be involved this week as they continue their recoveries.
“Mason is probably not going to be ready for Tuesday, but hopefully after that,” Carrick explained. “He should definitely be back around the Everton game.
