Breakthroughs and Blowouts: Waterpolo Winter League Roundup

The latest round of the Waterpolo Winter League provided a series of defining moments across both the Premier and First Divisions. From long-awaited first wins to the fall of unbeaten streaks, the action at the National Pool has significantly shifted the momentum of the season.
Premier League: Birżebbuġa Secure Historic First Win
In the top flight, Birżebbuġa finally found their rhythm, securing their first victory of the campaign with a spirited 13–9 win over Valletta.
The “Saints” showcased a clinical edge that had been missing in previous outings, led by a trio of standout performers. Miguel Cassar, Miguel Curmi, and Max Aquilina each netted a hat-trick, providing a relentless offensive front that Valletta struggled to contain. Additional goals from Dwayne Farrugia, Mikhael Cutajar, Malcolm Manara, and Jake Cutajar ensured a balanced scoresheet.
Valletta’s resistance was spearheaded by Kieyan Borg, who also claimed a hat-trick, supported by braces from Max Zammit and Ken Erdogan. However, Birżebbuġa’s collective scoring power proved too much for the Citizens to overcome.
Division One: Marsaskala Stand Alone at the Top
Marsaskala Aquatic have officially established themselves as the team to beat in Division One. In a high-octane encounter against Barracudas, the league leaders cruised to a 23–13 victory, maintaining their perfect unbeaten record.
The match belonged to Matthew Soler, who put on a goal-scoring clinic by netting eight goals. He was flanked by Thomas Camilleri (4 goals) and Marco Mannino (3 goals). For Barracudas, Marco Seminara was the bright spot with five goals, but they were ultimately overwhelmed by Marsaskala’s superior transition play.
Division One: Exiles Inflict First Defeat on Marsaxlokk
The biggest shock of the round came as Exiles dismantled Marsaxlokk’s unbeaten start to the season. In a tactical battle, Exiles emerged with a 13–9 win, proving they are serious contenders for the Division One title.
Kurt Griscti was the difference-maker, scoring six goals to silence the Marsaxlokk faithful. While Alistaire Cook tried to rally his side with four goals, Marsaxlokk couldn’t find their usual defensive solidity, suffering their first setback of the winter season.
