Neymar has admitted he could retire by the end of 2026, despite recently extending his contract with boyhood club Santos FC.

The 34-year-old forward rejoined Santos in January 2025 and played a decisive role in preserving their top-flight status, scoring five goals in their final five matches of the season. His return reignited optimism among supporters, but persistent injury problems continue to cast doubt over the final chapter of his career.

Speaking to Brazilian online channel Caze on Friday, Neymar acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“I don’t know what will happen from now on, I don’t know about next year,” he said. “It may be that when December comes, I’ll want to retire. I’m living year to year now.”

Neymar described 2026 as a pivotal year — not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and himself personally, with the World Cup looming. However, his participation in the tournament remains in serious doubt.

The forward, who recently underwent successful knee surgery, has struggled with recurring injuries in recent seasons and has not represented Brazil since October 2023. Despite that absence, he remains his country’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has repeatedly stated that only fully fit players will be considered for the World Cup, which will be held from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

For Neymar, the coming months could determine not only whether he adds one final World Cup appearance to his glittering career, but whether the curtain falls on it altogether.
