Borussia Dortmund secure key win in Bundesliga top-four race

Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-0 win over Hoffenheim at the Westfalenstadion — a result powered by Julian Brandt’s milestone 200th Bundesliga appearance. Brandt opened the scoring before halftime, and Nico Schlotterbeck sealed the victory with a second-half strike.
From the first whistle, Hoffenheim looked lively, testing Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel early through a dangerous attempt by Wouter Burger. But as the match progressed, Dortmund gradually gained control. Hoffenheim threatened again when Serhou Guirassy was about to shoot — only for Vladimir Coufal to make a last-ditch block. Shortly thereafter, Brandt fired a low shot that was well saved by Hoffenheim goalie Oliver Baumann.
The attacking rhythm died down after those early spasms, but just before the break Dortmund crafted their opener. A clever overlapping run from Yan Couto — set up by Karim Adeyemi — delivered the perfect pass for Brandt to tap in from close range.
Determined to build on their lead against one of the Bundesliga’s most potent attacks, Dortmund pushed hard after the interval. Hoffenheim came close when Daniel Svensson curled a header toward the back post, only for Baumann to tip it wide. But the goalkeeper was helpless when Schlotterbeck — despite slipping — controlled a long ball and smashed in a superb finish from the edge of the box.
That goal, his first Bundesliga strike since scoring against Hoffenheim in February 2024, seemed to sap the visitors’ momentum. Hoffenheim boss Christian Ilzer made changes in search of a response, but the initiative stayed with Dortmund. They nearly added a third when Couto wove through the defense and slid a pass to Guirassy — who rattled the bar, prolonging his goalless streak to four league games.
Hoffenheim pressed again deep into stoppage time, but lacked the cutting edge, and ultimately suffered their first league defeat in seven matches. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s win underlines their consistency — they’ve now lost just once in their last 21 Bundesliga games. A victory against a side that recently triumphed over European-chasing rivals Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig sends a strong message: Dortmund are serious contenders this season.
As for Hoffenheim, they remain level on points with the top four and will host Hamburger SV — winless away this season — in their next fixture.
