Bayern Munich’s emphatic 8-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, but club officials have warned that the title race is far from decided.

The reigning champions head to Cologne on Wednesday at the halfway point of the season, unbeaten in the league and sitting on 44 points after their demolition of Wolfsburg. Borussia Dortmund, their nearest challengers, trail on 33 points after being held to a 3-3 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač suggested this week that Bayern are in a league of their own and effectively out of reach, but Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund was quick to dismiss any talk of complacency.

“We have to focus on ourselves,” Freund told reporters. “We shouldn’t listen to what’s being said outside. The title hasn’t been decided yet. We’ve laid a strong foundation, but we need to keep going.”

A win in Cologne would see Bayern set a new club record for the best first half of a Bundesliga season. Vincent Kompany’s side currently boast both the league’s best attack and defence, with an imposing goal difference of 51.

Bayern’s firepower is underlined by their dominance at the top of the scoring charts. Harry Kane leads the way with 20 goals, while Luis Díaz and Michael Olise have each added nine.

“What the players did on Sunday was obviously not normal,” Kompany said. “But the motivation is there. We want to see how long we can keep this going. We always feel like we can score, and that’s something we take from a game like Wolfsburg.”

“The lads want to score goals,” he added. “I want clean sheets, but when I walk into the stadium with this team, I always have the feeling they want to score.”

Despite their commanding position, Bayern are keen to maintain focus as they look to turn dominance into another Bundesliga title.
