Tuesday night delivered a true European spectacle as defending Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain hosted an in-form Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes.

The Bundesliga giants arrived in Paris on a remarkable run — nine wins from nine league games in 2025/26, scoring 33 goals and conceding just four. In Europe, they had been equally dominant, winning all three of their group matches with a 12–2 goal record.

Díaz Strikes Early as Bayern Take Control

Luis Díaz wasted no time silencing the home crowd, scoring a quickfire opener after Bayern swarmed PSG in the opening minutes. Despite PSG’s dominance in possession — 66% in the first 15 minutes — their first real chance didn’t come until the 14th minute, when Vitinha saw his shot blocked and Fabian Ruiz fired wide moments later.

A major setback for PSG arrived midway through the first half as Ousmane Dembélé limped off injured in the 24th minute, unsettling Luis Enrique’s attacking plans. While Nuno Mendes’ energetic runs and Vitinha’s range of passing kept PSG pushing forward, Bayern’s physical presence — led by Konrad Laimer, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane — prevented the hosts from settling.

Marquinhos Error Punished Before Díaz Sees Red

Just as PSG began to grow into the match, disaster struck. Captain Marquinhos was caught on the ball by Díaz, who pounced to steal possession and fire past Lucas Chevalier for his second goal. Moments earlier, Serge Gnabry had rattled the woodwork as Bayern turned up the pressure.

Fabian Ruiz continued to test his luck from distance, but his third off-target effort before halftime summed up PSG’s frustrations. Then came the game’s turning point — a reckless two-footed challenge from Díaz on Achraf Hakimi. Initially shown a yellow card, the incident was upgraded to a red after VAR review, leaving Bayern down to ten men for the entire second half.

Hakimi was stretchered off in visible pain, replaced by youngster Senny Mayulu, who impressed with his energy and ball recoveries after coming on.

PSG Dominate but Neuer Stands Firm

The second half began with PSG in complete control — 86% possession in the opening 15 minutes — as Vitinha orchestrated play with a 94.3% pass completion rate, and Warren Zaïre-Emery went one better with 98.5%, completing 64 of 65 passes.

Vitinha’s three shots and tireless midfield display epitomized PSG’s dominance, and when João Neves finally pulled one back, the momentum completely shifted. Manuel Neuer, however, stood tall — producing five key saves, his busiest night since facing Real Madrid in May 2024.

Zaïre-Emery and Lee Kang-in each made three tackles, with the former also registering three interceptions, as PSG pushed relentlessly for an equalizer.

Bayern Hold On — Arsenal Next

Vincent Kompany made a late tactical adjustment, introducing Kim Min-jae for Olise with ten minutes remaining, though the substitute made little impact. Instead, Bayern’s defensive backbone — led by Jonathan Tah (95.5% pass accuracy) and Aleksandar Pavlović (100% completion, four ball recoveries) — ensured the visitors held firm.

PSG unleashed six shots in the final ten minutes, but a combination of desperate Bayern defending and wayward finishing denied them a comeback.

The result leaves Bayern top of their Champions League group, level on points with Arsenal but ahead on goal difference — setting up a blockbuster showdown between the two in the next round.
