Barcelona’s financial problems are well documented, and in recent seasons the club has relied heavily on La Masia to fill gaps in the first team. While teenage sensation Lamine Yamal—hailed as the heir to Lionel Messi—naturally attracts most of the global attention, another academy product is becoming increasingly indispensable: Fermín López.

The 22-year-old midfielder has grown into a regular starter under Hansi Flick, even if his name has yet to become widely known outside Spain. Chelsea, however, are well aware of his talent. The London club had a €40 million bid rejected during the summer transfer window.

As Barcelona prepare to visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in the Champions League, López is seen as one of their most dangerous attacking threats.

Flick was determined to keep the midfielder, although Barcelona were open to selling for the right price—one Chelsea ultimately did not meet.

“I’m convinced that he will stay, but in the end, I don’t know what happens. We have to wait. I am really happy when the market is closed,”
— Flick said in August, and in the end, he got what he wanted.

A La Masia product coming of age

López joined Barcelona at 13 and was adamant about remaining at the club. “He lives for Barça, he loves Barça,” Flick added.

His rise owes much to former coach Xavi Hernández, who brought him into the first-team setup during the summer of 2023. López made an instant impression—most memorably by scoring against Real Madrid in a preseason Clásico—which earned him a place in the plans for the 2023/24 season.

Last season he appeared 46 times under Flick as Barcelona completed a domestic treble, though many of those appearances came from the bench. This year, he has taken a significant step forward and has outperformed Dani Olmo when deployed in the No. 10 role.

With Gavi sidelined by injury—and off his best form even beforehand—López has become Flick’s most reliable option at the attacking tip of his midfield trio.

“He has it all”

In Flick’s physically demanding setup, López’s relentless energy is invaluable. He presses, recovers possession, drives forward, and consistently threatens goal.

“He scores, he runs, he’s very complete,” Flick said. “He has it all—he’s dynamic, he has speed.”

Away from the pitch, López has quickly become one of the most sought-after players by fans during away trips, second only to Lamine Yamal.

His numbers back up the hype: seven goals and four assists in 12 matches across all competitions this season. He hit a hat-trick against Olympiacos earlier in the Champions League group stage and delivered two excellent assists in the 3–3 draw at Club Brugge. His absence through injury was felt in their only European defeat, against PSG.

A growing star with a rising price

If Moisés Caicedo is fit to start on Tuesday, López will face one of his toughest matchups yet. But he arrives in excellent form, having helped Barcelona dismantle Athletic Club 4–0 on Saturday in their return to a rebuilt Camp Nou.

He marked his 100th appearance for the club with a goal and used his agility and timing to draw a reckless foul from Oihan Sancet, who was shown a red card.

López’s instinct for arriving in the box at the perfect moment has drawn comparisons to former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. While he usually plays slightly higher up the pitch than Lampard did, he has recently operated deeper due to Pedri’s injury, contributing in both creation and ball progression.

Despite his continued improvement—and perhaps because of it—Barcelona may eventually view him as a valuable asset to sell, should financial pressures persist.

And if he shines at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, Chelsea’s interest may very well reignite, with his price tag climbing even higher.
