Barcelona will officially step back onto Camp Nou turf on November 22, hosting Athletic Club in LaLiga, marking their first match at the iconic stadium in more than two years, the club announced on Monday.

The Blaugrana have been away from their historic home since the end of the 2022/23 campaign, playing their fixtures primarily at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic while Camp Nou underwent a major reconstruction project.

The redevelopment — a €1.5 billion overhaul originally expected to be completed sooner — was hit by repeated delays and construction challenges, pushing the reopening back by nearly a year. The stadium will initially welcome 45,401 supporters for its reopening fixture, with the capacity set to rise to around 105,000 once the top tier is finished.

Earlier this month, the club carried out a test event, allowing 23,000 fans inside to watch a first-team training session as part of the stadium’s phased reopening plan.

Barcelona also hope to receive UEFA approval to host Eintracht Frankfurt at Camp Nou in the Champions League on December 9, which would mark the stadium’s European return. The defending Spanish champions had to play two early-season matches at their 6,000-seat Johan Cruyff Stadium after safety permits for Camp Nou were delayed.

Camp Nou, originally inaugurated in 1957 and once capable of holding 99,000 spectators, is being fully modernized as part of the Espai Barça project. A new roof is scheduled for installation by the summer of 2027, a year later than first planned.

With the return now within reach, Barcelona prepare for a historic homecoming—one that ushers in a new era for one of world football’s most famous stadiums.
