Augsburg shock Bayern as comeback victory ends unbeaten streak

Augsburg stunned Bayern Munich with a dramatic 2-1 Bundesliga victory at the Allianz Arena, handing the Bavarians their first league defeat of the season (W16, D2) and securing a first win over Bayern in eight head-to-head meetings.
The pattern of the contest was established early, with Bayern dominating possession and pressing relentlessly through Luis Díaz, Lennart Karl and Michael Olise. Augsburg, however, executed their defensive game plan superbly. Sitting deep in a compact 5-4-1, the visitors frustrated the hosts despite Bayern enjoying 74% possession by the midway point of the first half.
Bayern eventually made the breakthrough in the 23rd minute with a routine set-piece. Olise delivered a pinpoint corner and Hiroki Ito rose above Cedric Zeisner to power a header into the net.
Rather than retreat further, Augsburg found confidence as the half progressed and even threatened an equaliser before the break. Han-Noah Massengo dragged a promising effort wide, while Robin Fellhauer struck the crossbar with the final action of the first half.
The visitors sensed opportunity after the restart, although Anton Kade failed to capitalise on an early error from Jonas Urbig. Augsburg continued to create half-chances, much to the frustration of Bayern boss Vincent Kompany on the touchline.
As the hour mark passed, the league leaders looked surprisingly blunt going forward, struggling to break down a side that had managed just four wins and 20 goals all season. Augsburg’s belief grew further when Elvis Rexhbecaj missed a gilt-edged chance after Lennart Karl slipped in his own penalty area.
Rexhbecaj and Alexis Claude-Maurice both tested Urbig as Augsburg piled on the pressure, with the latter forcing a save from a well-struck free-kick. From the ensuing corner, Urbig failed to claim the delivery and the ball ricocheted in off the back of Arthur Chaves’ head to bring the visitors level.
The shock was complete in the 80th minute. Despite Bayern having six players in the box, Massengo ghosted in unmarked to meet a cut-back and calmly slot home, silencing the Allianz Arena.
Both sides pushed forward late on, but Bayern were unable to find a response. While the defeat does little immediate damage to their title bid, with the Bavarians still 12 points clear at the top, Augsburg’s famous comeback lifts them six points clear of the relegation zone and delivers one of their most memorable results of the season.
