PSV’s impressive 14-match unbeaten run came to a halt on Tuesday night, as Atlético Madrid overturned an early deficit to claim a 3–2 victory in Eindhoven.

The Eredivisie champions had been flying — 10 wins in their previous 11 outings — and began with the confidence of a side in top form, though early chances for Atlético’s Marc Pubill and Nico González were denied by goalkeeper Matej Kovář.

But it was PSV who struck first. A rapid breakaway saw Ismael Saibari thread a superb ball in behind the defence for Couhaib Driouech, who squared for Guus Til to slot into an unguarded net, giving the hosts a deserved advantage.

The goal briefly rattled Atlético, and PSV looked to capitalize. Driouech remained a constant danger, but wasteful finishing let the visitors off the hook — one effort curled wide, and another attack ended with an unnecessary pass when he had a clean sight of goal.

Momentum swings

As the first half drew toward its close, Atlético finally found a rhythm. Their pressure paid off when PSV centre-back Yarek Gąsiorowski was caught in possession near the box, allowing Julián Álvarez to roll the equaliser into an empty goal. Kovář soon had to make another smart stop to deny Alexander Sørloth, as control slipped away from Peter Bosz’s side.

The second half began in disastrous fashion for PSV. Nahuel Molina’s long-range strike proved too hot for Kovář to hold, and former Feyenoord captain Dávid Hancko reacted quickest, firing home in the 52nd minute to put Atlético ahead.

The visitors then stretched the lead. Pablo Barrios surged through midfield unchecked and delivered an inch-perfect cross to Sørloth, who powered in a close-range header to make it 3–1.

With the game sliding away, PSV’s urgency returned. They pushed forward but struggled to carve out clear openings until Ricardo Pepi arrived at the back post to turn in a late goal, offering hope with five minutes to spare.

And the equaliser almost came. Deep into stoppage time, defender Armando Obispo found himself free in front of goal with only a simple tap-in required — but he mis-hit the chance, sending the ball agonisingly wide.

That proved the final act, as Atlético celebrated a third consecutive Champions League win while PSV tasted defeat for the first time in 15 matches.
