Cash Fires Aston Villa Past Manchester City for Fourth Straight League Win

Aston Villa continued their remarkable turnaround in form, defeating Manchester City 1-0 at Villa Park to record a fourth consecutive Premier League victory. Matty Cash’s first-half strike proved decisive, ending City’s long unbeaten run in the league stretching back to August.

Villa’s resurgence saw them become only the second team in top-flight history to follow a five-match winless start with four straight wins — a testament to their growing confidence under Unai Emery.

The visitors, who had opened the scoring in each of their previous 10 matches, were stunned midway through the first half. From a cleverly worked short corner, the ball reached Cash on the edge of the area, and the Polish full-back shifted past Bernardo Silva before unleashing a powerful left-footed drive that flew beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma, who stood rooted to the spot.

Erling Haaland, in his usual poaching fashion, nearly restored parity moments later when he broke into the box, but Emiliano Martínez denied him with a fine stop.

Villa’s bright first half was marred by an injury to Emiliano Buendía, whose early exit paved the way for Jadon Sancho’s first Premier League home appearance in claret and blue. The Manchester United loanee quickly made an impact, helping set up John McGinn for a deflected effort that whistled just wide.

Trailing at half-time in a league away fixture for the first time this season, Pep Guardiola’s men emerged from the break with renewed intent. Brazilian winger Savinho came close twice in quick succession, but the Villa defence stood firm with a series of crucial blocks.

Guardiola turned to his bench, introducing Nico González, Nico O’Reilly, and Jeremy Doku to increase the pressure. However, Villa continued to threaten on the counter. Sancho once again went close, forcing Donnarumma into a double save as the hosts looked for a second goal to seal the result.

City thought they had salvaged a point in stoppage time when Haaland tapped home, but the assistant referee’s flag quickly ruled the effort out for offside, sparking celebrations around Villa Park.

The victory marks Villa’s third consecutive home win over Manchester City and lifts them to seventh in the table — now just one point behind Guardiola’s side in fourth. City, meanwhile, see their nine-match unbeaten streak across all competitions come to an end.
