Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has suggested he could extend his contract at the club beyond 2027, but he insists he must earn the right to continue as manager by delivering silverware.

Arteta, who marks six years in charge of Arsenal this Saturday, won the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2020 but is yet to claim a Premier League title, with the team finishing as runners-up in each of the last three seasons.

This season, Arsenal sit two points clear at the top of the table and have also reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

When asked if he could see himself staying beyond the end of his contract in 2027, Arteta told reporters on Friday:
“Yes, but it’s about today. A lot of things have to happen in the next few months to earn the right. I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow.”

The Spaniard emphasized that Arsenal’s trophy drought was not due to poor performances.

“If you look at the performances and all the records that were broken in the club’s history, we still haven’t managed to win the trophies. That shows the level we are at, a level the Premier League has rarely seen.”

Arsenal will face Everton later on Saturday.
