Arsenal edge Brentford to strengthen their grip on first place

Arsenal preserved their flawless home form in the Premier League this season (W7, D1), grinding out a 2–0 win over a determined Brentford side who continue to struggle on the road, with just one away league victory to their name so far (L6).
With December’s fixture congestion looming, Mikel Arteta rotated his squad — but it didn’t take long for those changes to pay off. Only 11 minutes had passed when two of the introduced players combined to break the deadlock. Noni Madueke cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Ben White on the overlap, and his floated delivery was met by Arsenal’s leading scorer Mikel Merino, whose downward header bounced beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.
Madueke almost doubled the advantage moments later, only for Kelleher to parry his close-range drive. Brentford then grew into the contest, forcing David Raya into action as he tipped a Kevin Schade header onto the bar from a set piece. The Bees pressed forward with renewed belief, yet Arsenal remained dangerous, and Rico Henry had to produce two crucial interventions to deny Madueke before the break — first blocking a near-certain tap-in from Declan Rice’s cross, then preventing the winger from getting a shot away inside the box.
The momentum shifted after half-time, with Brentford starting strongly and the tension rising inside the Emirates as Arteta’s men clung to their narrow lead. The introduction of Premier League second-highest scorer Igor Thiago as part of a triple substitution only added to the anxiety.
Arteta reacted quickly, sending on Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka to restore control. Long-range efforts from Riccardo Calafiori and Rice tested Kelleher, and Merino should have added his second when he arrived for the rebound but steered wide under pressure.
The Gunners eventually found the cushion they sought. Kelleher denied Calafiori and then reacted sharply to a mishit from Saka — but there was no stopping the England winger moments later. Timing his run perfectly, Saka latched onto a through ball and rifled a finish that the goalkeeper could only get a palm to as the ball flew into the net.
That strike sealed a result that re-establishes Arsenal’s five-point gap at the top of the Premier League table, with only one defeat from 13 league outings so far (W10, D3). Arteta also extends his unbeaten run against Brentford to nine matches (W7, D2). For the visitors, the loss keeps them in mid-table and highlights a continued struggle in London derbies — no win in 20 of their last 24 such league meetings (D6, L13).
