Arne Slot Acknowledges Liverpool Must Find Solutions After Brentford Setback

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admits opposing teams have discovered effective strategies against his Premier League champions, and he must act quickly after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Brentford extended their losing streak to four league games.

The Reds’ title defence started strongly, but losses at Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Brentford, and last week’s 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United have thrown Slot’s side off course.

Slot described the Brentford loss as perhaps their poorest performance in this run of form, with Liverpool undone by a team that capitalised ruthlessly on their vulnerabilities.

“I’ve said this many times already: teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy, and we haven’t found an answer yet,” Slot told reporters. “Going 1-0 down after five minutes certainly doesn’t help. But even when we don’t play well, we’re able to score two goals and create chances from open play.”

Liverpool have now conceded early goals in all four Premier League defeats and also went behind at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday before mounting a 5-1 comeback.

Frustration Over Early Goal

Slot was particularly frustrated by Brentford’s opener after just five minutes. Despite preparing for the Bees’ long throws on Friday, Liverpool struggled to deal with Michael Kayode’s delivery. When Kristoffer Ajer flicked the ball on, Dango Ouattara reacted brilliantly to volley past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

“They won more duels than us, more second balls than us,” Slot said. “When you concede goals from set-pieces or counter-attacks, that’s exploiting one of their biggest strengths. That’s how we conceded two goals.”

Despite investing over £400 million in the summer transfer window on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Alexander Isak, Liverpool have looked a far cry from the side that won the club’s record-equalling 20th league title in Slot’s first season.

With four defeats in their opening nine games—the same number lost in the entire previous season—Slot acknowledged the challenges of a summer overhaul.

“When you change quite a lot over the summer, a rocky start isn’t a surprise, but I didn’t expect four losses in a row,” he said. “It’s always a bumpy road, and five of our last six games have been away from home, which hasn’t helped.”

Henderson Backs Former Club

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who impressed again for Brentford in midfield, expressed confidence that his old club will recover.

“I know recent results haven’t been great for them, but they’re still top players and a top, top team. It’s only a matter of time before they find their rhythm and get going,” said the England international.
