Amorim urges Man Utd players to step up following Bruno Fernandes’ injury

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim remains confident ahead of the Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle United, despite a squad heavily affected by injuries.
Speaking this afternoon, Amorim confirmed that both Kobbie Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes will miss the game, with Fernandes sidelined for the entirety of the Christmas schedule.
When asked about facing Newcastle with a depleted squad, Amorim said:
“I am confident we can win any game. Of course, we have some problems, but I believe in the team even without many players at this moment. It is more difficult, yes, but I trust my players. If we stay really focused, we can win.”
With key midfielders unavailable, Amorim suggested that Jack Fletcher, who made his debut in the defeat at Aston Villa, could play a larger role on Friday night.
“We have other players, and we may need to explore different ways of playing. Jack Fletcher did a very good job, and that’s why, when opportunities arise, we need to give space to guys like him and others,” he said.
Reflecting on Fletcher and Shea Lacey’s debuts, Amorim added:
“They are normal, good kids. Their behaviour this week has been excellent. I didn’t notice anything different because I played them for Manchester United. They are focused, preparing for the game, and believe they can contribute. That is a very positive sign.”
Amorim also confirmed that defenders Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt will be unavailable for the Newcastle match.
“We are still working with them, but they are not available for this one. Let’s see for the next game,” he said.
Missing Fernandes
Regarding Fernandes’ hamstring injury, Amorim revealed he addressed the squad earlier this morning about the captain’s absence, noting that the midfielder will likely return only in the final week of January.
“It is impossible to replace Bruno, but I told the team this morning that it is also an opportunity. Many players need to step up. Bruno does more than create; he organizes set-pieces and guides the team. His absence is massive, but it gives others a chance to show leadership.”
Asked about the impact of missing Fernandes on the pitch, Amorim continued:
“Everything. He understands every position, pays attention to every detail, and directs players during set-pieces and substitutions. But this is a great chance for players like Licha, Luke Shaw, and others to step up. We need more leaders because situations like this can happen to anyone.”
