Alexander-Arnold’s comeback provides crucial lift for Real Madrid’s season restart

Trent Alexander-Arnold is back from injury and ready to provide a timely boost for Real Madrid as the Spanish giants look to navigate the second half of the season.
Although his Madrid career has yet to fully take off, the England right-back could become a key figure under coach Alvaro Arbeloa as the squad continues to settle following his January appointment.
Alexander-Arnold may feature against an in-form Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, in a La Liga clash that promises intensity and high stakes. Madrid aim to move two points clear of Barcelona before the Catalans travel to Girona on Monday.
The former Liverpool full-back came off the bench in last weekend’s victory over Valencia and could start for the first time since December 3. Injuries to his hamstring and thigh have limited him to 12 appearances across all competitions this season, despite showing promise at the Club World Cup last summer.
“After (he’s had) a long time out, we will proceed with caution,” Arbeloa said following Alexander-Arnold’s return, with Spanish outlet AS reporting that Madrid plan to start him in the Champions League play-off against Benfica on February 17.
Even if Arbeloa opts for veteran Dani Carvajal or youngster David Jimenez against Real Sociedad, Alexander-Arnold is expected to accumulate valuable minutes on the pitch.
With star striker Kylian Mbappe a doubt due to knee issues, the defender’s creative input could be crucial against a Real Sociedad side unbeaten in their last nine matches. Matarazzo’s team recently defeated champions Barcelona and have one foot in the Copa del Rey final after a first-leg win over Athletic Bilbao.
Vinicius Junior will return from suspension for Madrid, adding further firepower after last weekend’s efficient, though uninspiring, win over Valencia.
Renowned for his crossing and passing, Alexander-Arnold has yet to fully showcase his attacking capabilities at the Bernabeu. His return is expected to lift the mood of a frustrated home crowd, still adjusting to coach Xabi Alonso’s dismissal and recent inconsistent results.
If he can stay fit, Alexander-Arnold has the chance to cement himself as a cornerstone of Arbeloa’s project in Madrid, dazzling supporters with his creativity and vision.
Player to watch: Ademola Lookman
New Atletico Madrid signing Ademola Lookman had a strong debut in the Copa del Rey against Real Betis, scoring a goal, but was quiet in last weekend’s La Liga defeat to the same opponents. In the upcoming derby against Rayo Vallecano, the Nigerian forward will be looking to open his account in Spain’s top flight.
