Serie A’s bottom-placed side Fiorentina have appointed Paolo Vanoli as their new head coach following the dismissal of Stefano Pioli earlier this week, the club announced on Friday.

Fiorentina have endured their worst-ever start to a Serie A season, collecting just four points from their first ten matches. The dismal run of form has sparked protests from supporters and ultimately led to Pioli’s departure.

Vanoli, 53, returns to Florence after more than two decades, having played for the club between 2000 and 2002. The former Torino boss, who was dismissed by the Granata in June, now faces the immediate challenge of lifting Fiorentina off the foot of the table.

His first test will come on Sunday, when Fiorentina visit fellow strugglers Genoa in a crucial clash at the bottom of the standings.
