AC Milan stretched their unbeaten Serie A run to 17 matches (W11, D6) after Rafael Leão struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a dramatic 1–1 draw at home to Genoa, who squandered a 99th-minute penalty that would have sealed all three points.

Milan threatened early, carving out the first chance after just seven minutes. Leo Østigård produced a superb last-ditch tackle to deny Youssouf Fofana, before Matteo Gabbia met the ensuing corner with a powerful header that crashed against the crossbar.

Despite that bright start, the hosts failed to dominate proceedings and Genoa soon grew into the contest. It was a familiar face who broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark, as on-loan striker Lorenzo Colombo escaped Gabbia’s marking to guide Ruslan Malinovskyi’s pass beyond Mike Maignan and give the visitors the lead.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side were handed a golden opportunity to level the score 10 minutes before half-time. Nicola Leali produced a fine close-range save to keep out Leão, but Fofana — with the goal at his mercy — slipped at the crucial moment and completely missed the ball, allowing Genoa to head into the break in front.

The Rossoneri emerged for the second half with renewed urgency and thought they had equalised on 57 minutes when another Gabbia header appeared to glance in off the post. However, VAR intervened after replays showed Christian Pulisic had diverted the ball with his arm at the back post, correctly ruling out the goal.

Milan continued to press and went close again when Davide Bartesaghi slid his effort agonisingly across the face of goal after being picked out by half-time substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Leali remained in inspired form, denying Pulisic with a glancing header before holding Zachary Athekame’s driven effort from distance.

The Genoa goalkeeper produced arguably his best save of the night on 87 minutes, springing across his goal to parry Pulisic’s volley at the back post as Milan piled on the pressure.

The San Siro was finally sparked into life in stoppage time when Leão rose highest to nod home Niclas Füllkrug’s flick-on from a corner, seemingly rescuing a point for the hosts.

Yet the drama was not over. Deep into added time, Bartesaghi brought down Mikael Egill Ellertsson in the penalty area, with VAR confirming the spot kick. After a lengthy delay, Nicolae Stanciu stepped up but blazed his effort over the bar, allowing Milan to escape with a share of the spoils.
