Vikings rule out J.J. McCarthy vs. Lions with hand fracture

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been ruled out of the team’s Christmas Day matchup against the Detroit Lions, head coach Kevin O’Connell announced.
McCarthy exited last week’s game against the New York Giants after suffering a hairline fracture in his right (throwing) hand. Backup quarterback Max Brosmer will make the start in his place.
The injury adds to what has been a challenging season for the 22-year-old McCarthy. Through nine games, he has thrown for 1,624 yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Staying healthy has been a constant struggle in his first full season as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. McCarthy has already missed five games due to a high-ankle sprain and also dealt with a concussion earlier in the year.
Injuries have followed McCarthy dating back to 2024, when he missed his entire rookie season after tearing his meniscus. The hand fracture is the latest setback in a growing list during his young NFL career.
Before leaving last week’s game, McCarthy completed the day with 108 passing yards and an interception, while adding 20 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Brosmer stepped in to finish the contest, helping lead Minnesota to a 16–13 victory.
Brosmer, an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota, will be making the second start of his career. With the Vikings already eliminated from playoff contention, the team will look to close out the season on a positive note behind the young quarterback.
The Christmas Day matchup carries far more significance for Detroit. The Lions remain alive in the playoff race but face a narrow path. They must win their final two games on the road against the Vikings and Chicago Bears, while also needing the Green Bay Packers to lose both of their remaining contests.
Green Bay faces a tough test Saturday night against the Baltimore Ravens before traveling to Minnesota for the season finale against the Vikings.
