Fiorentina claimed their first Serie A victory of the season at the 16th attempt, cruising to a convincing 5-1 win over 10-man Udinese at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The hosts were handed an early boost when Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was shown a red card for colliding with Moise Kean outside his penalty area. Fiorentina nearly made the numerical advantage count immediately, with Rolando Mandragora’s resulting free-kick grazing the top of the crossbar, before Albert Guðmundsson struck the post with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

La Viola did not have to wait much longer to break the deadlock. Mandragora made amends moments later, finding the net with another free-kick that flew through a poorly organised Udinese wall. Guðmundsson then doubled the lead with a superb individual finish, turning sharply away from his marker before rifling home his sixth goal of the campaign. Fiorentina made it three before half-time, Cher Ndour rising highest to head in Nicolò Fagioli’s inviting cross.

Udinese showed brief signs of a response early in the second half, forcing David de Gea into a save from Hassane Kamara. From the resulting corner, Oumar Solet squandered a gilt-edged chance, sending a free header wide.

Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as Fiorentina added a fourth soon after. Kean was on hand to tap in the rebound after Fabiano Parisi’s effort came back off the post. Udinese did manage a consolation through Solet, who produced a fine solo effort by curling a long-range strike into the bottom corner.

Despite once again failing to keep a home clean sheet — Fiorentina remain the only side yet to do so in Serie A this season — the hosts had the final say. Kean completed his brace late on, finishing confidently after racing onto a perfectly weighted through ball.

While Fiorentina remain rooted to the bottom of the table, the emphatic win — their fourth in six Serie A meetings with Udinese — should provide a much-needed confidence boost. For the visitors, inconsistency continues to prove costly, as they missed the opportunity to secure back-to-back league victories for just the second time this season.
