Prize money for 2026 World Cup set to rise substantially, FIFA announces

FIFA has announced a record $727 million financial package for the 2026 World Cup, marking a 50% increase in prize money compared to the previous edition.
The majority of the funds—$655 million—will be distributed as performance-based payments to the 48 participating nations, with the champions set to receive $50 million and the runners-up $33 million.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will also be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
Teams eliminated in the group stage will still earn $9 million, while each qualified nation will receive an additional $1.5 million to cover preparation costs.
In addition to prize money, FIFA confirmed plans for festival-style youth tournaments for under-15s, open to all member associations. The boys’ event will kick off in 2026, followed by a girls’ competition in 2027.
“In recent years, FIFA has stepped up its efforts to boost youth football,” Infantino said. “This is a natural next step.”
FIFA also confirmed that the 2028 Women’s Club World Cup will take place from January 5 to January 30.
