Roger Federer will return to the scene of some of his most memorable triumphs in January, headlining a “Battle of the World No.1s” exhibition to officially kick off the 2026 Australian Open, organisers announced Friday.

The Swiss legend will step onto Rod Laver Arena for the first time since his retirement in 2022, as Melbourne Park unveils its inaugural opening ceremony.

Scheduled for the evening before the tournament begins on January 18, the event will feature a tribute to Federer, who lifted the Norman Brookes Trophy six times as part of his 20 Grand Slam titles.

Federer will share the court with tennis icons, including four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi and Australians Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt, for a star-studded exhibition match.

“Thinking back to when I first called the Australian Open the ‘Happy Slam’ still brings a smile to my face,” Federer said. “I’ve experienced so many emotions on Rod Laver Arena—the joy of lifting ‘Norman’ six times, the honour of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, the thrill of competing against my biggest rivals, and always the incredible support of the Australian fans.

“Winning in 2017 is one of my most treasured Grand Slam memories, and following it up with another victory in 2018 was a dream come true in Melbourne.”

Federer also claimed the Australian Open title in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2010, cementing his legacy as one of the tournament’s all-time greats.
