Thursday night saw bottom-third West Ham travel to Old Trafford to face a resurgent Manchester United side. After Leeds United’s surprise win over Chelsea, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were desperate for points.

Absence of Paqueta
West Ham arrived with confidence, having gone three games unbeaten before a recent loss to Liverpool. However, Lucas Paqueta was suspended after his red card against the Reds, with Tomas Soucek coming in as the Hammers’ only change.

United’s Midfield Dominance
Manchester United, meanwhile, were looking to continue their recent form and climb as high as fifth in the table. Bruno Fernandes marked his 205th Premier League start, equalling Nemanja Vidic among non-British or Irish outfield players, and led by example.

The Portuguese midfielder, alongside Casemiro, dominated possession early, helping United keep 72% of the ball in the opening stages. Despite this, West Ham identified a weakness down United’s right flank, creating three early attempts at goal.

Wan-Bissaka Shines for West Ham
Former United man Aaron Wan-Bissaka was outstanding, both defensively and offensively. He completed 68% of his final-third passes, successfully dribbled five times, won nine of 13 duels, and cleared a goal-bound effort from Joshua Zirkzee. His performance was key in keeping West Ham in the game.

United’s Missed Opportunities
Despite dominating possession (64.9% to West Ham’s 35.1%) and creating multiple chances, United struggled to convert. Five shots in seven minutes, including Fernandes hitting the woodwork, highlighted their inefficiency. By half-time, United had 84% possession and 18 crosses, yet remained goalless.

Defensive Resilience
West Ham’s defensive pairing of Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos provided a solid platform, with Todibo completing every pass in the first half. Diego Dalot eventually broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, firing home unmarked at the near post.

West Ham Fight Back
Jarrod Bowen led West Ham’s response, registering 12 touches in the United box and four shots. Soungoutou Magassa was also instrumental, recovering possession seven times and scoring in the 83rd minute after a poorly cleared corner by Noussair Mazraoui.

A Hard-Fought Point
Magassa’s goal stunned United, allowing West Ham to defend resolutely in the closing minutes. Despite Bruno Fernandes’ late attempts in injury time, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, a valuable point for the Hammers and a frustrating drop for Manchester United.
