Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to battle ‘like animals’ against Brentford

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that injuries are beginning to take their toll on the squad ahead of tomorrow night’s Premier League clash with Brentford at the Emirates.
Speaking at this morning’s media session, Arteta provided updates on several key players sidelined by injury.
“It’s frustrating, especially losing players like Leo (Trossard) when he was in such great form,” Arteta said. “(Gabi) Martinelli couldn’t play more than he did on Sunday against Chelsea, and (William) Saliba wasn’t able to train either.”
Regarding Saliba, Arteta explained: “The ankle issue was really random and unlucky. He tried at Anfield but had to stay out. This new one is also bizarre, but hopefully it will be a matter of days before he’s back.”
Arteta also shared news on Kai Havertz, who has yet to return to full fitness. “He was doing everything but couldn’t reach the next level. We’re desperate to have him back. He’s a player I love for what he brings, and I see him suffering. When he returns, it’ll be a massive boost for the team.”
In a general injury update, Arteta added: “Saliba – it’ll be a matter of days. Trossard – same, matter of days. Havertz – matter of weeks. Gabriel – he’s doing well, but that’s also weeks.”
“Fight Like Animals” Against Brentford
On the upcoming match against Brentford, Arteta emphasized that Arsenal must set the tone on the pitch, with the support of their home fans.
“Brentford bring different threats and challenges. Tomorrow at 7.30pm at the Emirates, we have the chance to bounce, put in energy, and win the game,” he said. “Like animals, everybody at the Emirates, to go again and beat Brentford. It’s vital, massive.”
Arteta also highlighted the impact of Christian Norgaard, who joined from Brentford in the summer. “From the moment I spoke to him, he brought something we didn’t have in the squad. He’s a real leader on the pitch.”
Individuals Stepping Up
The Arsenal boss also praised several players for their contributions during what has been a strong start to the season.
On Spain duo David Raya and Mikel Merino, Arteta said: “Raya is an amazing goalkeeper. It’s been a great story—trying to sign him years ago and waiting two years made the journey even more phenomenal. And Merino? His goalscoring hasn’t surprised me. He’s curious, committed, and loves his profession. It’s hard to put limits on him.”
On Declan Rice, Arteta added: “He’s very close to what we expected him to bring to the team. He’s been incredibly consistent but still has room to grow.”
Arsenal host Brentford tomorrow night, sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
