Valencia battled back from a sluggish start to salvage a valuable point in a tense 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano, extending their winless La Liga away run this season to seven matches (L4, D3).

Rayo came into the contest hoping to rediscover the spark that carried them through an impressive October, though a disappointing November stretch — just one victory in five outings — had tempered expectations. Still, the hosts dominated the opening period, producing their most dynamic football in weeks.

For much of that one-way first half, Valencia had Julen Agirrezabala to thank for keeping the scoreline level. The goalkeeper produced a standout moment midway through the half when he raced off his line to deny Jorge de Frutos, before José Copete headed Fran Pérez’s follow-up effort off the line.

But Los Che’s resistance finally broke.

Nobel Mendy, who had already squandered a free header earlier, made amends just minutes later. A cleverly worked short corner gave Gerard Gumbau space to send a tantalizing delivery into the area, and Mendy met it with a deft glancing header that left Agirrezabala with no chance.

The second half brought a very different Valencia. More assertive and composed, they quieted the Estadio de Vallecas crowd and began to find momentum, even if clear chances remained elusive. Their equaliser came through sheer persistence — and a slice of luck. A scramble in the box ended with Diego López’s effort taking a heavy deflection off Mendy, looping over the stranded goalkeeper and into the net.

With the match opening up, it was Rayo who nearly snatched all three points late on. Andrei Rațiu unleashed a powerful strike that rippled the side-netting, drawing gasps from the home supporters who thought it had crept inside the post.

In the end, Rayo were left ruing a missed opportunity after a promising start, while Valencia edged themselves slightly further from the relegation battle — even as their search for a first away league win of the season continues.
