Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso believes Trent Alexander-Arnold is only beginning to show his true potential following his summer move from Liverpool.

The England international, 27, missed several weeks of the season due to a hamstring injury but has featured in Madrid’s last two matches. At the start of the season, he was rotated with veteran Dani Carvajal before sustaining the injury.

“I think we will see a better Trent,” Alonso said at a news conference ahead of Madrid’s LaLiga clash with Girona on Sunday. “Without a doubt, it’s positive after the injury. He was able to play 90 minutes against Elche, 90 against Olympiacos. We need him. It’s his first year, and it’s normal to have this adaptation period.”

Alexander-Arnold, who played over 300 times for Liverpool before leaving his boyhood club, had a mixed display in Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Elche but showed more rhythm as they defeated Olympiacos 4-3 in Athens.

“He’s starting to feel like himself,” Alonso added. “He demands a lot from himself; he plays at a top, top level. We have to support him during this big transition, but it’s very encouraging.”

Alonso also singled out fellow England international Jude Bellingham for praise, highlighting his work ethic and growth.

“I have very good communication with Jude, a very good relationship,” Alonso said. “He’s a world-class star, but he has this desire to improve, to learn, to be more efficient with the huge potential he has. I like players with curiosity and initiative who ask what we can do better.”

Madrid have drawn their last two league games and will aim to regain momentum against Girona. Alonso confirmed that Franco Mastantuono, Antonio Rüdiger, and Éder Militão have returned from injury and will be in the squad, while Raúl Asencio remains doubtful.
